Harrisburg city is Pennsylvania’s capital, but before it was such, it was thought to have been the homeplace of Native American’s as early as 3000 BC. The Native Americans referred to the area as “Paxtang” and the location was an important trading location amongst many tribes. In 1608 Captain John Smith traveled up the Susquehanna River from Virginia to Pennsylvania and made first European contact with the Susquehanna tribe.
Not long after in 1719, an English trader by the name of John Harris Sr. came to Paxtang and came to own 800 acres of land. He gained a license to operate a ferry which he used along the river, and in 1785 his son began to create the town of Harrisburg across the hundreds of acres. The city was formally named the Capital of Pennsylvania in October of 1812.

Despite being inside the city, the only thing reminding you that you aren’t secluded is the noise pollution from the nearby highway. Within Wildwood, you can walk for miles and enjoy the trails with sections of wooden bridges and wetlands. Wildlife can be seen throughout the park, and children like to hunt for painted rocks hidden by kind locals as part of a game.
