Dr. McCafferty
Hi, I’m Dr. McCafferty. I was born in the Galapagos Islands, working as a migrant pearl diver and leading shark tours to travelers from around the world, when I came across a sick dolphin one day, and found my porpoise.
I was actually born and raised in Alexandria, VA, where I developed a passion for science and animals that led me to pursue a biology degree from Bates College in Lewiston, ME. This path was originally supposed to culminate in a PhD in Marine Biology focusing on research, which landed me in two internships at Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, FL where I spent time rehabilitating sea turtles, manatees, and pygmy sperm whales. It was during these internships working alongside veterinarians who volunteered in the lab that my true calling became apparent. I subsequently attended and graduated from Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 2000. I started my career in Orlando, Florida and after one year moved to Maryland where I started my family.
I have two sons whom I am very proud of, my oldest is at Penn State University studying computer science and my youngest is in grade school enjoying soccer, basketball, and flag football. I enjoy scuba diving, and spending time at the beach. However, my greatest passion is running. My accomplishments include having finished over 30 marathons, 5 of which were the Boston marathon, and I have completed two Ironman Triathlons in Wisconsin in September 2012 and 2014.
